West, Jr. It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in English Language and Literature complete English 39, 40, 41, and History 6. It is recommended that a student who presents for entrance less than the equivalent of twenty-five quarter hours in one foreign language pursue such language until he has earned a minimum of twenty-five quarter hours. COMPOSITION AND RHETORIC 1. Composition and Rhetoric. A study of the fundamental principles of English composition, and training in the preparation of the research paper. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Monson, Read, Nilsson, Espy, West 2. Composition and Rhetoric. A study and application of the principles of exposition and argumentation. Prerequisite: Composition and Rhetoric 1. Three quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Monson, Read, Nilsson, Espy, West 3. Composition and Rhetoric. A study and application of the principles of description and narration. Prerequisite: Composition and Rhetoric 1 and 2. Three quarter hours. Spring. Monson, Read, Nilsson, Espy, West 5. Argumentation. A critical study of the logical process of thinking, and practice in handling of evidence, detecting of fallacies, and presenting of material. Five quarter hours. Winter. Monson 6. Journalism. A study and practice in the fundamentals of news-writing. The writing of an attractive, straight news style is considered. To give practical expression, the class gathers news for the College paper, Signpost, composes, and edits it. Two quarter hours. Autumn. Nilsson 7. Journalism. A study and practice in featurized and interpretive newswriting in contrast to a straight news style. Stress is laid upon copy and proof reading according to the principles previously learned. Class members are apprentice editors for certain issues of the College paper. Newspaper plants and scholastic press conferences are attended. Two quarter hours. Winter. Nilsson 8. Journalism. A study and writing of editorials, interviews, longer feature articles, and other important assignments. Class members who have not yet been editors of the school paper fill editorial positions for certain issues. Professional writers address the class upon significant practical phases of journalism. English Grammar for Business Students. A course designed to give instruction in the fundamentals of English. Three quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Espy LITERATURE 21. American Literature: New England Group. A study of the major New England poets and essayists and of their immediate followers. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Read 22. American Literature: Metropolitan, Southern, and Western. A study of the spread of literary activity and of the development of the novel and the short story after the Civil War. Three quarter hours. Winter. Read 23. American Literature since 1890. A study of contemporary trends in American thought and literary forms as revealed through a reading of representative criticism, poetry, fiction, biography, miscellaneous prose, and drama of the period. Three quarter hours. Spring. Read 25. Children's Literature. A course designed to equip prospective teachers with a knowledge and appreciation of children's literature. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Read 27. Biography. A study of the great English and American biographies. Two quarter hours. Winter. Monson 29. The Short Story. A course in the technique, creation, analysis, and appreciation of the short story. Five quarter hours. Spring. West 30. Poetry Appreciation. A course designed to give training in the appreciation of poetic expression. Five quarter hours. (Not given 1941-1942.) 31. Literature of the Drama. A survey course devoted to critical reading of plays of outstanding dramatic and literary value. Three quarter hours. Spring. Read 39. English Literature. A survey of English literature from Beowulf to 1660. A detailed analysis of the form and content of the prose and poetry of the period is made for the purpose of creating an intelligent appreciation of the literature. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Monson 40. English Literature. A survey of English literature from 1660 to 1798. A careful study of the social, philosophical, and political ideas of the period is made in order to clarify the meaning and create an enjoyment of the poetry and prose of the period.
