Advanced French. A review of the rules of French grammar, conversation drill based on reading, and extensive reading for the purpose of enabling students to read French easily and fluently without constant reference to a dictionary. A study of the elements of the natural environment and their influences in the activities and cultural pattern of mankind. Five quarter hours. Winter. Buss, Childs 2. Geography of Utah. A general cultural course designed to provide a better knowledge and appreciation of the natural environmental features of the state. Emphasis is placed upon physiographic features. Childs It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in geology complete Geology 1 and 2, or Geology 11 and Geology 3, 5, and 7; and Chemistry 1 and 2, or 4 and 5. Geology majors and other interested students are invited to attend the meetings of the Geology Club held twice a month. Geology 1, 2, and 3 make up the logical full-year course in geology for the student who wishes an overall foundation in the subject. On leave of absence. 41. English Literature. A survey of English literature from 1798 to 1900. The course is designed to teach the student to appreciate the literature of the major writers of the period. For this reason, consider able time is spent in discussing the social, philosophical, and economic problems which confronted writers. The reading and interpretation of representative Shakespearian comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Monson 44. Modern British Literature. A course designed to familiarize the student with the most noteworthy literary products of England since 1900. Emphasis is placed upon literary styles and upon major problems. Five quarter hours. Spring. Monson 45. The English Novel. History and development of the English novel from its beginning to modern times. Five quarter hours. (Not given 1941-1942.) Monson Forestry Ernest L. Miner 1. Elementary Forestry. A course devoted primarily to the study of the proper utilization and conservation of our agriculture, forests, and biological resources. A course providing instruction and extensive practice in grammar, reading, dictation, and conversation with a view to developing an ability to understand French without translation.
