A study of the nutritional needs of the normal individual and also the preparation and serving of simple foods for the sick. Three quarter hours. Designed for nurses. Winter. Huskinson 11. Home Economics Survey. An orientation course dealing with a brief history of the home economics movement and with present opportunities for professional work in home economics. The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with possible vocations open to women trained in the field of home economics. Special lectures are given by professional women engaged in various home economics activities related to foods and nutrition, textiles and clothing, interior decoration, home management, and child development. One quarter hour. Autumn. Peterson 13. Household Management. A study of the fundamental principles involved in systematic housekeeping as related to health, convenience, economy, and time. Special attention is given to family income and expenditure, standards of living and simplification in organization of housework. Three quarter hours. Spring. Alleman 15. Consumer Problems. A symposium course designed to awaken in students an awareness of consumer-buying as a personal problem. It aims to give a clearer picture of buying and selling practices in the retail market and of the forces working for and against the best interests of the consumer. It surveys legitimate and fraudulent business practice, commercial advertising and labeling, standardization, services of government and private agencies to consumer, consumer ethics, etc. Field trips are arranged. Three quarter hours. Spring. Peterson 16. Home Furnishing and Decoration. A study of the evolution of the home and the furnishing and decorating of the home with only a moderate income. Three quarter hours. Winter. Peterson 18. Personality Development (For College Men.) A course devoted to a discussion of the college man's dress for all occasions; and a consideration of his personal grooming, conduct, and behavior. Lectures by guest speakers. Two quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Alleman 19. Personality and Fashion. A course dealing with problems of individual students as related to charm, poise, and personal appearance. Two lectures a week cover health, personal grooming, wardrobe care, posture, carriage, and factors that constitute charm, poise, etiquette, and personality as expressed through dress. One additional period a week is devoted to posture, health, speech, grooming, styling, and clothing clinics which give each student an opportunity for individual consultations with and guidance by experts in each field. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Peterson 21. Clothing the College Girl. A course designed to assist the student in planning and organizing a wardrobe suitable for college life. Emphasis is placed on clothing selection, considering line and design of patterns, and color and texture of fabrics most expressive of the student's personality. The course includes a study of the commercial patterns, pattern alteration, fitting, and general construction processes as governed by materials chosen. It is the aim of the course to help each girl make changes in her current wardrobe to adapt it to her personality and to her needs as well as to actually undertake the construction of one garment. A course dealing with the political, social, economic, and industrial growth of England from the earliest times to the present, and tracing her rise as a world power. Five quarter hours. Spring. A study of the problems of discovery, exploration, and colonization of the new world in terms of colonial institutions and life, European conflicts for colonial possessions; and causes and results of the American Revolution. A course treating the Critical Period and its problems, formation of the Constitution, tests of the new government, sectional interests, expansion, and slavery. Three quarter hours. Winter. C. H. A course devoted to a consideration of the Reconstruction Period and a tracing of the political, social, and economic development of the United States to its establishment at the present as a world power. A course devoted to laboratory discussion and practice in the preparation of meals, with respect to their nutritive value cost, and place of service. Two quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Alleman 6. A study of the influence of body energy upon build, temperament, age, and sex; food elements and their uses in the body; and factors causing variation in the basal metabolism of individuals.
