A study of human nature and behavior. The course has to do with the origin and development of the personality and treats principles of mental hygiene. Five quarter hours. Winter. Neville 8. Social Psychology for Nurses. A study of human behavior especially applied to the nursing profession. Three quarter hours. Spring. Neville 4. Introduction of Social Problems. An introduction into community social problems. Local institutions such as poverty, crime, juvenile delinquency and mental deficiency are studied. Field trips and surveys are taken. A course designed to give extensive practice in reading, dictation, and conversation, and to develop the ability to understand Spanish without translation. Training in pronunciation based on phonetic principles. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Barker 2. Elementary Spanish. A course devoted to grammar, reading, and conversation. Five quarter hours. Winter. Barker 3. Intermediate Spanish. A course devoted to grammar review, dictation, conversation, and simple composition. Prerequisite: One unit of Spanish or Spanish 2. Five quarter hours. Spring. Barker 4. Intermediate Spanish. A review of the essentials of Spanish grammar; class and collateral reading, composition, and conversation. Prerequisite: Two units of Spanish or Spanish 3. Five quarter hours. (Not given 1941-1942.) Barker 5. Advanced Spanish. A course devoted to class and collateral reading of novels, short stories, and dramas. Five quarter hours. A review of grammar rules; consistent conversation drill based on reading, and extensive reading for the purpose of enabling students to read easily and fluently for pleasure without constant reference to the dictionary. West, Jr. It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in speech complete 18 hours in speech, including Speech 1, 5, 11, and 3 or 13. 1. Principles of Speech. A course concerned with the study of the fundamental elements of public speaking: speech appreciation, bodily action, voice, vocabulary, diction, organization, and delivery. Emphasis is given to the practice of speeches before the class and before other audiences whenever practicable. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Allred 3. Extempore. A course devoted to study and application of the principal forms of public address, such as the speech to inform, to entertain, to convince or persuade, to actuate, etc., with direct emphasis on the extemporaneous methods. Delivery of speeches in systematic schedule before the class is required. Assigned work prepares students also for public appearances and for contests in extempore speech held within the College or in contest with other colleges and universities. Three quarter hours. Winter. Allred 5. Interpretation. A course in which the principles of oral interpretation for entertainment purposes or for personal satisfaction are emphasized. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Allred 6. Oratory. A course devoted to the study of principles of oratory with special emphasis on the composition of original orations and the delivery of these orations with specific public situations in mind. Selected examples of fine oratory, past and recent, are studied as a supplementary effort of the class. The oratorical contests sponsored by the department as well as those entered into with other schools furnish added incentive for student effort in speech making of oratorical consequence. Three quarter hours. Winter. Allred 9. Impromptu Speech. A course devoted to the creation of a back ground of information and skills with a view to developing special competence in the impromptu form of speech. Systematic practice on subjects assigned on short notice are an important element of the class work. This class, like other classes offered in speech making, seeks to prepare the student for audience appearances, other than those made before the class itself, including impromptu speech contests held within the College and in competition with other institutions. Three quarter hours. Spring. Allred 11. Play Production. A course concerned with the study of the major problems confronting one in the production of plays in the typical amateur situation. Students of special industry and ability are afforded opportunity for development as assistants in the major dramatic productions of the year. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Allred 13. Acting. A class devoted to a study of the general principles of acting together with laboratory work in the class room and on the stage as a means of applying practical principles. Five quarter hours. Winter. Allred 21. Radio. A course offered to help beginners in the field of radio speech. A schedule of College broadcasts furnishes the practical experience necessary to such a beginning. Planning of suitable programs, rehearsals, and experiences before the microphone is required. Specialized assignments are developed to suit individual interests and abilities.
