A study of store arithmetic, stock control systems, store layout and merchandise problems to give the student an appreciation and understanding of the scope of the retail problems. Individual store problems are assigned each student for study and analysis. Lecture three times a week and conference meeting one day a week. Three quarter hours. Winter. Staff 73. Merchandise Information. A non-textile information course for those students who are interested in studying and analyzing this type of merchandise from its origin, through its manufacturing process until it is ready for consumption. A study is made of the lines that seem to fit the needs of the students most. Lecture three days a week and lab oratory one day a week (two hours). Five quarter hours. Winter. Staff 74. Application of Merchandise Information. A course designed to assist each student to gather information for writing a merchandise manual. Group work one day a week. One quarter hour. Winter. Staff 75. Retail Merchandising. A background study of the problems involved in buying and selling; and the proper selection of buying sources for fashion and staple merchandise. A complete study is made of the methods used to advertise and promote goods; and the close relationship of fashion, color, line, and design in all sales promotion work. Lecture four days a week and conference one day a week. Four quarter hours. Spring Staff 77. Retail Personnel Management. A study of the current legislation affecting the employee and employer. The complete recognition of the importance of the human element in store operation is considered along with the methods used by stores to improve employer relationships. Lectures two days a week. One quarter hour. Spring. Staff 79. Consumer Problems. A symposium course in Home Economics 17 should be given to the student to give him an understanding and appreciation of the scope and importance of the consumer movement. Five quarter hours. Spring. Staff Office Machines 81. Duplicating Machines, Dictaphone, and Office Appliances. A course designed to prepare the future secretary to operate efficiently the various machines and appliances found in business offices. Thorough and detailed training is given in the use and operation of: dictaphone, mimeograph, mimeoscope, multigraph, multigraph-duplicator, and numbering, stapling, and booking machines, paper trimmer and cutter. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. 82. Secretarial Science Laboratory. A finishing course planned to provide actual experience under practical business conditions. This course includes taking a personal dictation from various individuals, transcribing notes from dictaphone records, and all forms of duplicating (mimeograph, multigraph, carbons, etc.) A student should successfully complete this course before he is recommended for the higher positions in Secretarial Science. Prerequisite: Business 55, 81, and Business 17. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Staff 83. Secretarial Procedure. A secretarial-practice laboratory course designed to familiarize the student with the forms and practices en countered in the business office. Filing and Indexing: Instruction giving the principles of indexing and filing according to the alphabetic, geographic, and numeric systems. Practice in indexing, coding, and filing of letters and business forms is included. Prerequisite: Speed of 30 net typing. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. M. Peterson 84. Calculators: Key-driven. A course of training in the operation of Burroughs, Comptometer, Marchant, Monroe, Adding and Ten-key Listing Machines. A continuation of Business 84. Application of office machines to various computations such as percentages, chain discounts, prorating, decimal equivalents, and so forth. Three days a week. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Wilson, Markham 86. Posting Machines. A course devoted to instructions and practice in the operation of Burrough, Remington, and other posting machines. Bookkeeping procedure in banks and commercial offices is stressed. Detailed work in listing, posting, and proving of accounts in connection with controlling systems is taught. Three days a week. A thorough review of the fundamentals of mathematics with special emphasis upon commercial arithmetic and its application to the phases of business practice. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Markham 93. Bookkeeping. A course designed to prepare the secretary for routine office work involving the recording of business transactions.
