A course covering the study of the economic background of modern business, wealth, and how it is produced, making an income and sharing in wealth, personal progress through money management, insurance, money and banking, and consumer education in buying. It also includes problems in connection with the organization and operation of a business, interpretation of statistics in forecasting business conditions, and study of business cycles. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Markham 96. Integrated Office Practice. A course devoted to the purpose of giving each student an opportunity to integrate and coordinate all information and skills learned in other related subjects and to apply knowledge gained to actual problems that arise in a business office. Training is given in correct office procedure which includes the technique of telephoning, telegraphic service, cable and radio service. Assignments are made and discussions are conducted on banking, financial duties, and other general duties of a secretary in an office. The course includes training in modern methods of filing. Two quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Markham 96a. Integrated Office Practice. Laboratory course for Business 96. Students are given an opportunity to perform their laboratory work in actual business offices to gain business experience. Students work under expert supervision. Employers for whom students work can be given as references. Students successfully completing this course are recommended for placement in the most desirable business positions. Open only to advanced students, or with approval of instructor. Two quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Markham 97. Vocabulary Building, Penmanship, and Spelling. A course designed to give students a comprehension of the proper spelling and usage of business words. Improvement of the penmanship of the student is stressed, together with the developmnt of control and a proper combination of muscular and finger movement. Theory and methods of ornamental writing are also included in the course. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. M. Peterson 98. Business Behavior. A course designed to aid the student in his individual personality problems as well as to assist him in solving the various problems which may arise after he secures a position in the business world. The course covers instruction in proper attitudes toward health, business etiquette, emotional control, personal appearance, business clothes, and adequate self-development after securing a position. Huskinson Dr. Ivan Thompson Lillian Albrecht Dr. J. G. Olsen 51. Nursing Arts. A course in which the student is first oriented in the field of nursing. She studies the basic factors in the care of patients, including physical, emotional and social factors. Simpler nursing procedures are demonstrated and the student begins to acquire her nursing skill by practicing under supervision, first in the classroom, and later when she is sufficiently skillful, in the wards. Two quarter hours each quarter. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Albrecht 53. Drugs and Solutions. A study of methods used in the preparation and administration of drugs. This includes the study of weight systems, measurements of dosage, and terminology. Two quarter hours each quarter. Autumn. Staff 55. Introduction to Medicine. A history of medicine, with an introduction to diseases, and preparation of the nurse for future study in medical nursing. Two quarter hours. Winter. Seidner 56. Materia Medica. A study of the more important drugs; their source, dosage, administration; their psysiological, therapeutic, and untoward effects, and antidotes. Some history of drug therapy is included and a survey of the sources of information about drugs. Emphasis is made on accurate and intelligent administration of drugs by nurses. Three quarter hours. Spring. Olsen 64. Diet in Disease. A course dealing with classified hospital diets and their application; a discussion of diets in various diseases; methods of feeding and planning diets for patients; calculating diets as to their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats values. Principles underlying the diet therapy together with a review of diseases. This review is given by a physician. Application of diet therapy is given by a dietitian following the physician's lecture. Two quarter hours. Spring. Thompson, Huskinson 71. Social Adjustments: Ethics. A course taking up ethical problems that confront the nurse during her preliminary period of orientation in the hospital. It deals with the matters of dress, etiquette, and conduct in general, as well as professional ethics. Two quarter hours. Autumn. Glasscock 72. Social Adjustment: History. An outline of nursing history beginning with the earliest conceptions of nursing, and tracing its development through the various epochs of history.
