Show Flood victim thanks Red Cross Rains, in May, flooded a home in Harrisville in which the owners lived downstairs and I rented one of two loft apartments. It was a nightmare. Fans were blowing downstairs to dry the carpets; it was hot, as the air conditioners were dis¬connected; dust was blowing all through the vents; and the noise of hammering and pounding was awful. The landlords said it was too expensive to relocate us until things were fixed, nor would their renters' insurance pay the cost. I went into shock and was devastated. The other tenant called the Red Cross. They came over immediately and relocated us that day. The Red Cross gave me medical attention, food, gas for my car and directed me to Weber Mental Health for crisis counseling. I want to thank you, Red Cross, and all who work there. Cindy Christmas Ogden Standard 11/5/02 Fire leaves 8 without home Standard-Examiner 11/14/02 OGDEN - A basement fire in the 3400 block of Polk Avenue left a mother and seven children without a place to live, at least temporarily. Connie Findley told fire investigators she was in the house at about 3:30 p.m. when the smoke alarms in the house started going off. She said at first she thought it might just be food cooking, then realized there was something wrong. She saw heavy smoke coming from the basement. Ogden Battalion Chief Steve Splinter said when firefighters arrived, flames were coming out of the home's basement and creeping up the north side of the house into the attic. The fire was quickly knocked down. Only Findley and her infant grandson were in the house when the fire started. They escaped uninjured. The cost of the damages and the cause of the fire is unknown. The American Red Cross was called to help the family with shelter and other needs. Standard Front Page 11/21/02 Fire leaves five without home LAYTON—Smoke alarms helped a Layton man get out of a burning house uninjured Saturday afternoon, but he had to run right by the flaming kitchen of his home to do so. Layton Fire Battalion Chief Blair Green said Jovan Aresmindi was sleeping in the basement of his home in the 1700 block of North Gregory Drive shortly after 4:30 p.m. when food left cooking in the home’s kitchen upstairs caught fire, engulfing the front part of the home. Smoke detectors woke him but "the only exit he had was up the stairs right by the kitchen, but he came up right by the flames," Green said. Green said when fire fighters arrived "there were flames coming out of the door and the kitchen window and the eaves of the northeast corner." Firefighters took about 10 minutes to knock the fire down and about two hours to clean up and make sure the fire was out. Green estimated the damage at $60,000. The American Red Cross was called to help the home’s five residents find living arrangements. |
