The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Red Cross looking for lost pennies to bring relief to Midwest victims By CHARLES F. TRENTELMAN Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN — If the term "pennies from heaven" implies something nice and light sprinkling down, don't let the latest Red Cross fund¬raiser hit your head. So far it weighs 80 pounds in a nice big lump of cents, compli¬ments of those living at the Harrison Regent Retirement Residence. The Bonneville chapter of the American Red Cross considers that small change. It's after bigger treasure: somewhere out there, and not just in the tongue of your loafers, is another half billion pounds of pennies, waiting to be picked up and donated. The goal is to scrounge all the stray pennies from jars, bottles, piggy banks and dresser tops in the nation and put them to use for flood relief in the Midwest. It's quite a large untapped source of funds, assuming it can be mined. Mark Branz, president of Echelon Computer Solutions in Ogden got the idea after reading an article in the paper saying that there are 100 billion pennies "missing." That's the number, the article said, the U.S. Mint has made in the last 10 years or so that have disappeared from circulation. See PENNIES on 2C |
