Show Davis School District decides to pull AIDS video By WENDY OGATA Standard-Examiner Davis Bureau FARMINGTON — Davis School Dis¬trict administrators have decided to dis¬continue use of an AIDS prevention video after an uprising of public protest. A citizens group opposing use of the film in Utah schools said it's pleased with the decision, but will continue to assure it's banned from public schools by seeking a legal declaratory judgment against "A Letter From Brian." Layton High had been the only Davis school using the half-hour Red Cross vid¬eo that portrays a situation in which some high school students discover that a friend of theirs has contracted AIDS. District spokesman Bonnie Durrance-Doyle said a half dozen district officials viewed it Friday. Durrance-Doyle said district superintendent Richard Kendell decided in a written statement to discontinue the film's use be¬cause of the number of questions regarding its "legality and appropriateness," she said. A state law prohibits use of public funds to provide instruction on use of birth con¬trol devices and substances. The video mentions the word "condom." Joy Beech, founder and executive direc¬tor of Families Alert, a citizens group she said supports state laws on morality, said she's pleased with the district's decision. To assure it isn't used again, Beech said this morning she's asked an attorney to work on obtaining a declaratory judgment against the film. "We're concerned about AIDS," Beech said. "But we feel that to uphold our state laws is the safest way to teach about AIDS." That means teaching morality and the il¬legality of sexual intercourse outside of marriage, she said. |
