Show The Pioneer Post Volume X Issue 1 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter January 2008 1570 West 400 North - Phone 627-1919 State of the City - Keith H. Butler, Mayor As we start a new year, I am pleased to give my annual report on the status of our community. Recently the city's annual independent audit was completed and all our revenues met our expenses. In fact, the city finished the year with a sizable surplus that will be transferred to capital projects. Other cities envy our community because we run our government with no municipal property taxes. While other government are raising taxes, Marriott-Slaterville City has never had property taxes and continues to live within its means. I expect that 2008 will be a busy year with new businesses opening on 12th Street such as Intermountain Farmers, Hi-tech Storage, and Les Olsen & Company. We welcome these new businesses. Also welcome are the Methodist Church, Venture Academy Charter School, and Mill Creek Plaza. In addition, 2008 will bring the completion of the I-15 reconstruction, a new Rocky Mountain Power substation servicing the city, commencement of UDOT's reconstruction of 12th Street, and many other projects. As you know, the city now operates Marriott Park and Slaterville Park. I am asking the park advisory committee to make ongoing recommendations for park planning and operation. Some of the plans include new boweries, improved parking, added playground equipment, trees and walkways, and safety improvements. The city will seeking grant funds to help off-set expenses relating to park improvements. The senior center is being utilized almost daily with senior activities, family parties, weddings, meetings, and other functions. I am proud to report that our Susan Marriott Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers dedicated a Memorial Library as part of the senior center. Now, if you want to browse some books or the internet just stop in for a visit. I look forward to locals also using this library for collecting photographs, community history, and family history. All of which can now be scanned to CD or DVD in the library. Our citizen emergency response team (CERT) added many new faces to its ranks in 2007. I appreciate those involved in emergency management and expect more planning in 2008. I continue my fiscal policy of "pay as we go" in city government so that we can continue to avoid the burden of property taxes. I ask residents to support this policy by volunteering in our wonderful city. With one another's support we can sustain our model community._ Legislative Report Dennis Ilium, City Council Marriott-Slaterville City operates under the mayor-council form of government. Under this form of government the city has two separate but equal branches of government, the executive branch, and the legislative branch. The mayor leads the executive branch assisted by the city administrator and staff. The executive branch handles the daily operation of the city, proposes the budget, responds to violations and complaints, manages parks, implements policies and services, among many other responsibilities. The legislative branch consists of five city council members. The city council, acting collectively: makes the law, approves the budget, levies taxes, and has oversight ability. Two councilors are elected from the east district, two from the west district, and one council member is elected at-large. In Utah, there are multiple forms of city and county government. Understanding your form of city and county government helps you know how your community works._ WEBER COUNTY RABIES CLINICS Weber County Animal Service is hosting its winter rabies clinics - shots cost $11.
