In mid-October Six Companies crews prepared to wrestle the Colorado from its bed and into the diversion tunnels. Trucks began dumping fill along the Nevada side of the river to create a temporary dike in the shape of a "C" to narrow the river's flow and seal off work areas downstream. President Herbert Hoover visited his beloved project on his way back to Washington D. C. from California. Beleaguered by the Depression, Hoover (at center) had badly lost the election to Franklin D. Roosevelt. At far left is Walker Young; at far right is Frank Crowe, with Edmund 0. Wattis next to him. |
