Show day, September 20, 2008 5A Lottery From 1A “Wow, it was just unrealistic.” The Thompsons quickly learned it’s hard to keep good news a secret — the entire store was soon excited for their good fortune. “Everyone started yelling and screaming,” Jennifer Thompson said. “The whole . store was congratulating us. — Oh, it was so neat.” The couple, both retired from Hill Air Force Base, said although they have won aa few hundred dollars before in the Idaho lottery, they never expected to win such a large amount. — “It was pretty exciting because it was the biggest winner we have had in our ~ store for several years,” said Brenda Gugelman, a Malad Top Stop Chevron employee. | } A large win such as this has to be claimed at the Idaho Lottery headquarters in Boise. The Thompsons drove up Sunday to be there when it opened Monday. “Until you actually get the check in your hand, that’s when the realization sinks in,” Charles Thompson said. After state and federal taxes, the Thompsons took: home about $67,000. “We've already paid off quite a few bills,” Jennifer _ Thompson said. “My husband wants to buy a fishing boat, because he loves to fish.” Other than helping family members and making some home improvements, the | Thompsons don’t plan on any extravagant purchases. Even though he chose the winning ticket, Charles Thompson said he doesn’t feel lucky. “My wife is the lucky one,” he said. “That’s why I have her scratch off the — cards.” David Workman, Idaho Lottery public information specialist, said the Idaho Powerball is up to $154 million this weekend. “People from Utah win all the time.” |
