Martinez told the’ Standard-Examiner that after he filed an Oct. 4 complaint with Chief Administrative Officer John Patterson, city officials wanted to “negotiate an exit strategy” instead of addressing his allegations of racial discrimination and a sexual harassment coverup. As a result, Martinez, who is black and earned $63,136 annually before being fired Dec. 4, said he instructed his attorney Jim Retallick to negotiate a settlement that has been rejected by the city. “The offer was to raise my pay to $75,000, which would be lower than many other people in my position with back pay to Martinez Mayor Matthew Godfrey described Martinez’s claims of racial discrimination as “bizarre” and without merit. He said the allegations only surfaced after the settlement offer was turned down. “We hired him two years ago at a salary he agreed to and when he decides that wasn’t enough money, (he claims) it may have been because he had been discriminated against,” Godfrey'said. “So he wants us to pay him $150,000. It’s the strangest thing I have when I started, or $150,000 for me to ever heard.” Martinez was terminated for dis- quit,’ Martinez said. He was hired by the city in 2004. See FIRING/4A |
