Show 34 WEBER COLLEGE Scribulus, the college literary quarterly, was conceived to serve a threefold purpose: first, to provide practical periodical experience for those whose primary interests are in creative work; second, to stimulate the student body generally to self-expression; and third, to give a more utilitarian purpose to class exercises in composition. Manuscript is solicited from students, alumni, and faculty. Forensics The Department of English directs all forensic activities of the student body. Extempore Speaking Two traditional intra-collegiate extempore contests are held annually. The James L. Barker Contest is designed to stimulate interest in extempore speaking and to encourage class competition in this activity. The winner is permitted the honor of having his class numerals engraved upon a silver loving cup, and is given an individual award of ten dollars by Professor James L. Barker. The J. S. Lewis and Company Contest is intended to foster competition among individual participants. The winner is presented with a gold medal. The Department of English each year sponsors two novitiate contests in extempore speaking, the purpose of which is to orient new students in Weber and to initiate them into the speech program of the college. A gold key and a silver key are awarded by the department to first and second place winners in each contest. Oratory Two traditional intra-collegiate oratorical contests are held annually: the Evelyn Nielson Woods Contest and the '05 Contest. The Evelyn Nielson Woods award, a personally selected medal, is offered to the student delivering in assmbly the best prepared ten-minute address. The honor of having his class numerals engraved upon a silver loving cup is given the winner of the '05 Contest Debating Debating has as its curricular basis a course in argumentation, Engish 5. However, those who represent the college in inter-scholastic competition are chosen upon merit from the school generally. Participation in one inter collegiate debate makes a student eligible for membership in the local chapter of the national Phi Rho Pi honorary debating society. Drama Under the direction of the Department of Speech it is customary to present three full-length plays each year, as well as a number of one-act plays for contest and special program purposes. Students of recognized ability and training are used as assistants in different phases of the play production program. Classes in interpretation, acting, and directing offered by the department are designed to give special training for such purpose within the school and qualification for amateurs in their own church, clubs, and social circles. Casts for all major productions and for contest plays are chosen by try-outs open to all registered students of approved scholastic standing. WEBER COLLEGE 35 Music Each year the Department of Music concentrates its efforts upon the development and rendition of an opera and a musical comedy. Orchestra and band membership of the college is open to all students of ability. COMMUNITY PROJECTS Chi Omega Sorority: The alumnae organization of Chi Omega Sorority, in Ogden City, established as an annual social service project, in 1934, the raising of a fund to assist a Weber College girl in obtaining an education.
