Show current city hall as a result of these negotiations. But unfortunately, we still faces many problems with increased traffic on our roads, needless lags in talks with Ogden officials, and unresolved environmental and other concerns. Working with Ogden officials is extraordinarily difficult. Their government system is laden with red tape and unworkable bureaucracy, and certainly a model we wish to avoid. Ogden compounded their problems by weakening to the wealthy and to the notorious Boyer Corporation for redevelopment of the former DDO. From my interaction with this company, I have found it to be self-interested, self-serving, and otherwise selfish. We attempted to work with Boyer to try and preserve the DDO Base Commander's home, commonly referred to as the Ziemer Home, since it was one of the last original Marriott homes still remaining in the area. This home was constructed in the 1880s by Charles Ziemer. A historical account of the home was complied in 1999 by Michael and Anna Keogh detailing the great historical significance of the home and the transcontinental railroad route immediately adjacent to it. This detailed history can be found in the city's historical files. The city had desired to acquire this home to preserve its historical significance. Staff and department heads met with representatives from Ogden, namely Mike Pavich, and Carl Cook from the Boyer Corporation. These attempts to save the home were futile since the quest for economic development outweighed the reasons for historical preservation. These men thwarted our preservation efforts with sure guile, and they destroyed the home in early January 2000. It is a tragedy to destroy history as these men did, especially when the home could have been more productive as a significant historical landmark than a parking lot for a shopping center.
