Title |
Fremont Figurine |
Image Captions |
Baked clay Fremont Tradition human figurine from Weber Canyon, northern Utah. Many Fremont farming villages contain human figurines; some are elaborate such as this specimen, whereas others are rather plain. The more elaborate examples exhibit necklaces, sashes, and ear bobs; some even depict breasts. Because there are no historical analogs to these fascinating human figurines among Native peoples of the eastern Great Basin and Colorado Plateau, we do not know the exact roles that they played in the Fremont world. Perhaps they were used in ceremonial activities such as world renewal/fertility rites. |
