Incised stones from the Little Mountain area of northern Utah. Many prehistoric habitation sites in the Great Basin contain etched tabular pieces of stone, most of which exhibit geometric designs such as triangles, punctations, parallel and cross-hatched lines, chevrons, and ovals. As with the Fremont human figurines, the primary purposes of these artifacts cannot be determined. Speculations to their functions vary widely, including idle scribbling, ceremonial activities, and trance-related visions. |
