TO ascertain at what hour it will be high tide at Sandy Hook on the 1st of July, find first the time of high water at New-York under that date, and then subtract 40 minutes, as found in above table opposite Sandy Hook ; the result is the time of high water required. WEATHER SIGNALS. When black triangular flag is placed above white or blue flag it indicates warmer; when placed below, colder weather. For example 3, 1, 2 indicates warmer, fair weather, followed by rain or snow. WEIGHTS AND MEASURES. MEASURES OF LENGTH.A palm is three inches; a hand (horse measure) is four inches ; a span is 10 7/8 inches; a cubit is two feet; a pace is three feet; a fathom is six feet; a great cubit is 11 feet; 16 1/2 feet equal x rod ; 40 rods 1 furlong ; 8 furlongs 1 mile ; 60 geo. miles 1 degree ; a mile is 5280 feet, or 1760 yards in length ; a league is 3 miles; a day's journey is 33 1/2 miles; a Sabbath day's journey in the Bible is 1155 yards. SOLID OR CUBIC MEASURE.1728 inches equal 1 cubic foot; 27 cubic feet X cubic yard ; 40 cubic feet of round timber 1 ton; 50 cubic feet of hewn timber 1 ton ; 128 cubic feet of wood (4 feet wide, 4 feet high, and 8 feet long) x cord ; 24.75 cubic feet, 1 perch of stone.
