Along this highway are scattered beauty-spots and places of interest from the Caves of Haena and_ lovely Hanalei Bay on the north around to Waimea and the Barking Sounds on the south. Above Waimea, in the heart of gorgeous mountains, is Waimea Canyon, which is in color and formation a reproduction in miniature of the more famous Grand Canyon of Arizona. This with Olokele Canyon and many smaller and less famous but equally beautiful mountain spots, gives Kauai a claim on at least some of the traveler’s time. What is true of Kauai as regards its dis-_ tinctiveness from Oahu is true also of the four larger islands which lie to the southeast of Honolulu. The first of these, separated by only twenty miles of water from Koko Head, Oahu’s southeasterly point, is Molokai. The average traveler sees Molokai only from the deck of his steamer. If this takes him, as it does on several of the steamers, along the northern or windward coast, he views a magnificent spectacle of tremendous green cliffs rising from the fringe of gleaming surf, which marks the water’s edge, to a height of two or three thousand feet straight up into the clouds.
