Show sible by motor, is at times of normal activity a magnificent spectacle with its seething lake of red-hot molten lava lashed into a fury of motion by escaping volcanic gases. At other times the lava recedes, leaving a vast smoking pit into which one gazes with awe. But whether active or quiescent, Kilauea is a wonderland with forests of giant tree-ferns crowding the very crater itself, with vast ancient lava tunnels to be explored, and acres of lava beds through cracks in which hot steam and vapors constantly escape. Under National Park supervision this area has been so trailed and marked that those who love to don hiking apparel and walk or ride may do so to their hearts’ content without fear of losing their way. | Kilauea Volcano is usually thought of as a mountain, and it is in fact at an elevation of 4,000 feet above the sea. In reality, how- ever, it is not a mountain alone, but stands on the slope of the vast hulk of Mauna Loa, 13,675 feet high. To the north of Mauna Loa stands its twin, Mauna Kea, 13,825 feet high. Both of these old volcanoes (Mauna Loa is still intermittently active) are snowcapped much of the year. “They really make up the island of Hawaii, their lower slopes providing space for sugar cane, pineapples, bananas, coffee and tobacco, while their higher slopes graze herds of cattle and flocks into sleepy old Kona with its romantic Sioa and delightful climate, up over the vast ranges of Parker Rance and back along the precipitous Hamakua Coast into Hilo. A railroad also skirts this coast—a line of many trestles spanning gorges full of brilliant tropic vegetation. Of the two the rail trip along ‘this coast is most spectacular, but the motor trip, either as a part of the longer trip or as a side-trip from Hilo, is well worth while. Another delightful side trip is that into old Puna with its historic ruins, its black sand beaches, and memories of ‘ ‘The. Bird of Paradise.”’ ‘This brief sketch has touched only the high spots in a trip through Hawai. It is a place ot endless possibilities for delightful exploration, or for just plain, restful loafing in its balmy air, depending on one’s needs and inclinations. [hose who can make a long visit invariably find it more than worth while. ‘Those who must be content with a short stay will find that, too, delightful, and will in most cases want to return to see the many things missed before in a limited visit. Attractive tours of varying lengths are offered by many steamship lines and travel agencies, though many prefer to take their own time, and have no schedule, so go independently. In conclusion, Hawaii is always attractive, of sheep up to the elevations where vegetation from ceases. July, through a sunny fall and into sparkling, balmy winter. The traveler may time his visit to meet his own convenience. Around the vast bases of the two mountains and their subsidiary ranges, circling the island, is a fine motor road. ‘The motor trip over this road made by way of the National Park takes one through extensive volcanic regions, [ 20] flowering tree time in May, Hawai smile and will always welcome warm “Aloha.” [21] June him with and a |
