Show 84 WEBER COLLEGE 1600; 17th Century literature 1600-1700; 18th Century 1700-1800; 19th Century 1800-1900. English 80 (Teaching of English in High School) is also required of all teaching majors. English 87 (English Grammar) and English 86 (vocabulary building) should be elected by every student who pursues a major in English, preferably should be completed before registering for English 80 (Teaching of English in High School.) All students majoring in English should become reasonably familiar with the foreign languages. A free reading knowledge of French and German is necessary for advanced and graduate work. Requirements for A.A. In addition, ten hours from each group, (English courses above 1 and 2 may not be substituted for French and German,) English 3 (5 hours); and at least 3 courses (15 hours) in American literature or three courses (15 hours) in English literature. English 1 and 2 (10 hours) are prerequisite to English 3. Introductory Course 1 is required of all students in the first quarter of residence. Course 2 is required of all students in the second or third quarter of residence. All other courses in the department are elective. Courses in Rhetoric and English Composition English 1. Composition and Rhetoric. A detailed study of the principles of rhetoric is made, WEBER COLLEGE 85 and a high standard of theme work is demanded. Illustrative reading assignments are made from a wide range of modern literature. Required of each student in his first quarter of residence. Daily. Autumn, Winter, or Spring quarters. Forms of prose literature are studied as models. The written work consists of twelve short themes of one hundred to five hundred words each, and six long themes of one thousand five hundred to three thousand words each. Required of each student in his second quarter of residence. Open to students who have completed English 1. Daily. Winter or Spring Quarters. Five credit hours. English 3. Composition: Exposition. A course designed to teach the principles of expository writing. Daily and longer themes. Prerequisite: English 1 and 2. Daily. Spring quarter. Five credit hours. Professor Read, Professor Monson. English 4- Narration. A course designed to teach the principles of narration and to give practice in narrative writing. Pre-requisite: English 1 and 2. Five credit hours. Professor Read. English 5. Composition: Argumentation. A course designed on the basis of practical logic, involving critical study of logical processes of thinking, handling of evidence, detection of fallacies, presentation, etc. Daily and longer themes.
