Show 1 Thank you, Don. It is a privilege for me to serve as Master of Ceremonies for this dinner honoring Bill and Rosemary Hewlett, two close friends that I hold in high esteem and great affection. If you read your invitation to this affair carefully, you will remember that it says that you are invited to, and I quote: "The 1992 Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner" and then names two recipients. It obviously was not proof-read by both Hewletts. You might slip the "singular" rather than the "plural" by an engineer from Stanford but certainly not by an English major from Vassar. Before this evening it has always been the custom to confer the award on a single individual but tonight we have what in the shotgun business is called a "matched pair". In this case of Bill Hewlett this is not so surprising for his whole history suggests that he is the perfect partner. Let me recall a personal experience to illustrate the point. Some thirty years ago I was lunching with Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. I told them that I had just come from a Wells Fargo directors' meeting where the head of Litton Industries had appeared at his own request to comfort the Wells directors about any concerns they might have had about Litton, which was on a real buying binge and through acquisitions expanding at an unprecedented rate.
