Show pursuing the matter until he got an answer that passed by his strict standards. In the case of Utah International this insistence on getting an answer that satisfied Bill Hewlett ruined the scheduling of our field trips, particularly to mines and mills like uranium where the mining and milling were on the more complex and scientific side. No longer could the mine management get by with the simplistic answers that for years had satisfied the rest of us. Now with Hewlett we had trouble even understanding the question, much less the answer. One of Bill's boards was the old Kern County Land Company which was the subject of an unfriendly takeover offer from Occidental Petroleum. Given the reputation of Dr. Arnold Hammer, Kern quickly sought and found a White Knight and as is common in such circumstances the Kern directors found themselves being sued individually and collectively for millions of dollars of damages. Bill was once again in an unusual position. He was the only director who could have paid off if the plaintiffs prevailed which, fortunately, they did not. Bill has also served as a director or trustee for some 14 organizations that did not pay him at all. This is not to be taken as an indication of the value of his services but it does show that for the right causes he'll work cheap! The range of these organizations is remarkable. Bill had his eyes in the skies with Hand and the Atmospheric Research Foundation, under water with Woodshole Oceanographic,m his heart with the charities, his mind with the educational institutions, and his feet on the ground with all of them. Bill's extravagant contribution to society has not gone unnoticed or unrecognized. Bill has been the recipient of 23 honorary awards - 4 shared by Hewlett and Packard - 18 individually - 1 shared with Rosemary. As you would expect, many are in the areas of industry and science 2 |
