Show 1 March 2, 1993 Arbuckle Achievement Award Dinner-John Gardner, recipient. Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen. Let me say at the outset that I am delighted to be here and to have the privilege of presenting the Ernest C. Arbuckle Award to a very worthy recipient. If you will forgive me a personal reference, this is not the first time that I have been so privileged. After Ernie's untimely death, as his close friend and associate I was asked to take his role in the award ceremony. I did so for the next few years. But with the passage of time the recipients were getting younger and I, alas, was getting older. It seemed more appropriate to have the award presented by a past recipient closer in age to the awardee. So this was done but tonight is no violation of that policy. John Gardner, a very close friend of Ernie Arbuckle's and a practitioner of Ernie's "repotting theory", repotted himself at age 77 as the Miriam and Peter Haas Centennial Professor in Public Service and as lecturer in Organizational Renewal and Leadership at the Graduate School of Business. This made him eligible for the award and made me once again eligible to present it. John's earlier associations with the school were less direct. At Ernie's invitation John, Secretary of HEW, was the principal speaker at the 1966 dedication of the first new building housing the Graduate School of Business. Twenty-two years later he was also the principal speaker at the dedication of the second building. |
