2 Although we were undergraduates together, I first met John in the late 50's at Ernie Arbuckle's home in Woodside. With John were his wife Aida and daughter Francesca, later his collaborator of the wonderful and revealing book "Quotations of Wit and Wisdom" subtitled "Know or Listen to Those Who Know." The Arbuckles and the Gardners were then the closest of friends and that relationship continues now into the next generations. John and Aida were married while John was still an undergraduate. They were given a very small lot in College Terraces. On that lot John and his brother Louis, together with his cousins Lou and Henry Godman, built with their own hands a very small house. Proud of their handiwork, John was displaying the new house to a friend and John said (here I take some poetic license with his language): "This place is built like a brick outhouse!" To prove his point he then thumped the side of the house with his fist and to his dismay the side fell in and part of the roof collapsed. But since then he has built more soundly, forgoing physical structures for the more important world of ideas. The Arbuckle Award is given annually to "an individual judged to best exemplify the qualities of dynamic leadership and administrative skills in the private, public, or non-profit sectors." John Gardner is guilty on all counts. In 1935 John earned his AB degree from Stanford "with great distinction"
