Show Ed took good advantage of the Bohemian experience. He did more than his bit as "spear carrier" in a number of Grove productions. We were together in a Grove play based on a Treasure Island theme. I was a "lady from Bristol" but Ed was more fittingly a pirate. My career had peaked but Ed's career progressed to where he was finally given some lines to say. He religiously attended the daily Lakeside Talks but where the others sought seats or sprawled on the grass, Ed walked the whole time at a slow deliberate pace, smoking a fine cigar, courtesy of Mandalay. Free cigars were a Mandalay tradition dating back to an ancient time when most of the members smoked cigars. It was a tradition that Ed staunchly defended even in the face of the fact that Mandalay cigar smokers were now hard to find. This was not the only benefit from Mandalay where Ed was the leading beneficiary. Ed logged more man/days in the Grove by far than any other member of Mandalay ever. Ed did not invent Mandalay's method of allocating charges but he profited by it. He was quick to realize that no camp captain had the accounting skills, or the basic data, or the competence to go beyond dividing the total expenses by the man/days to compute a per diem charge and bill each member for the number of days he spent in the camp. 3 |
