Show degree of satisfaction that that is a claim Mr. Littlefield cannot make!" It is sad but true that many of the best of Parmer's bon mots will be lost to history. By his own public admission he lacked the self-discipline to prepare for his performance well ahead of time and right up to the last minute was revising and changing the text or actually ad libbing during the performance. To recapture some of this vintage Fuller one has to be expert at reading his not always decipherable handwriting and much was thrown away on the foolscap paper on which it was written. He had a touch all his own. For the most part he saved the sharpest needles for those that he considered good friends. Some of the gems that have survived and come into my possession are worth repeating here, although I cannot do justice to P Ill's unique delivery. One of his favorite targets over the years was his brother George. Together they constituted l/25th of The List of Fifty. Secretly Parmer took great pride in George's remarkable record as a participant in Bohemia but this made George all the more visible and available. Siring a dinner in the Main Dining Room in 1966 Parmer stated: "At the outset, I apologize for the motley group at the head table. I had planned something a little more distinguished. Unfortunately, I've been out of town so I had to ask brother George to make up the head table list and as you can see he's a little inexperienced with this line of work. I thought it was particularly presumptuous of him to include himself up here. Three years ago, he was up here on his merits. Some of you may remember at that time that, since Thanksgiving is a time for appreciation of nature's bounties at harvest time, I had George at the head table as kind of a fertility symbol - he's got 7 known children from 30 to 3. However, there's been no action since, at least no results, so he has no place here tonight except among the self invited 5 |
