Show E. W. Littlefield Speech at Bill Hewlett's 80th Birthday Celebration Saturday, May 22,1993 Good evening, friends. Bill is indeed a very rare person. Who else do you know that has 15 college degrees? He has a BA and EE from Stanford and an MS from MIT. But he also has 3 law degrees doctors of science more engineering degrees a Doctor of Humanities a Doctor of Electronic Science a Doctor of Public Policy With all this going for him, believe it or not, he flunked out of Golf School! Try as he might, he has never mastered the art of hitting a golf ball, either far or straight. This would be more forgivable if he would apply some of his demonstrated generosity in other fields to his willingness to abandon after a reasonable time the search for his errant golf ball in the wilderness where he has hit it. Part of his problem with golf may stem from the fact that he was busy with other things. In his days he has served on at least 22 boards as a director or trustee. Apart from H-P, one-third of these paid for his services in hard currency. I served on three of these boards with Bill and I can testify that he was an extraordinary director.
