Show Pg. 58 North Morgan to school. The present school building was erected by Henry Mortenson and John Simmons. Miss Alga Edholm taught school there. Charles Pintz was the first Presiding Elder. Stoddard is now a part of North Morgan Ward. Pg. 59 Round Valley. The first white man to settle in Round Valley was John Cameron. This is thought to have been about 1860. Mr. Filshop, a shoe-maker, came soon after. He lived at the mouth of a hollow which bore his name. John Biggy moved there in 1861 with his wife and one child, who is now Mrs. Mirna Nielson of Roy, Utah. Henry Olpin, father-in-law of John Gibby came about 1861 or 62. In 1863 Edward Geary, with his wife and five children, came. Henry Blurmill also came that year. About 1864 came Henry Ridout and Samuel Carter and their families. Mr. Carter was the first Presiding Elder of the branch. After a few years residence in Round Valley he moved to Porterville and Henry Olpin took his place as Presiding Elder. The people lived by farming and sheep and cattle raising. Some of them lived in dugouts. Some had log houses with dirt roofs and dirt floors. At one time they were entirely without flour and lived on roots and greens for six weeks. The Indians showed them the kind of roots to dig – segos, thistles and artichokes. |
