Show Pg. 136 properties for curing skin diseases, as well as being valuable for bathing purposes. Later on Dr. T. S. Wadsworth and Dr. C. F. Osgood made their homes in Morgan. They also analyzed the water with results as Dr. Kohler, and urged the owners to convert the springs into a bathing resort. This developed into the organization of a company, consisting of Samuel Francis, Richard Fry and Dr. Wadsworth, with a capital stock of $1500.00. Dr. Wadsworth was given charge of turning this wilderness into a pleasure resort. At this time the ground surrounding the lake was covered with a dense growth of underbrush, with cottonwood and box elder trees. The $1500.00 was soon spent, and an additional $1000.00 borrowed and used in cleaning the grounds, building a plunge bath, dressing rooms, store rooms, and a small pavilion. Finally the Lake Como Resort was opened to the public. The largest and most notable gathering at the resort was the resort was the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir and friends – 800 in all. The Railroad Company gave them a .50 cent rate from Salt Lake City and return. Quite a little business was done Pg. 137 for a few years, and all means earned was used in developing the resort. All went fairly well until the coming of the panic of 1892-94, during the Harrison and Cleveland administrations. After this the business was closed and the resort turned over to vandalism. In a few years the buildings were all torn down and the pavilion burned by an incendiary. In 1900 Mr. Fry died. The resort became involved. It was taken over by Mr. Francis, who assumed the liabilities, and paid a small sum to the heirs of Mr. Fry. The resort remained in this condition until after the death of Mr. Francis, when it was sold to the present company for $8000.00. At the present time (1930) there are 45 cottages, swimming pools – both hot and cold water. A dancing pavilion with one of the finest floors in the state. There are playgrounds for the children, as well as for the grownups, and the usual attractions that go with a summer resort. During the season the average number of visitors is around 2,500, and it is no uncommon thing to find 500 automobiles parked in and around the resort. |
