Show Dad supplying a little store over a small stream on our property. During the summer, Madeleine would sell to the neighbors penny candy, peanuts, chewing gum and occasionally ice cream that my mother made. We found friends and relatives asking for free treats. Still, it was fun and a good experience. Elementary School During grade school, I remember being in school plays at the Orpheum Pantages Theater. "In a Midsummers Night's Dream", my sister and I sang and danced with other selected children. Another time I performed as a student of the Le Crist School of Dancing. It was owned and operated by Willam Christensen and his two sons: William Jr. and Luellyn. Young Willam headed the San Francisco Ballet in his later years and Ballet West and was the first in America to introduce choreography for the "Nut Cracker Suite". I was sad when my dancing lessons were terminated. I wanted to be a toe dancer. Secondary School Our junior high gym teacher, Miss Marjorie Brewer, had me play piano for her classes as students marched and exercised to my music. Our school gave two years of high school credit due to crowding at Ogden High, so I took two years of study at once, attempting to finish high school in three instead of four years. I would have made it except for three-quarters of a credit. I took a night school typing course and graduated in 1931. The last two years at Ogden High School were filled with study and not with extra-curricular activities because of my work load. I think the most memorable person in my school experience was our principal, M. June Peirce. Mother and Dad knew her well. She was an inspiration to all of her students, soft-spoken, and completely capable of handling the tender child as well as the rowdiest boy. She lived to be one hundred years old, and when I last saw her in a rest home in Belmont, California, about 1975, her mind was still very sharp. She remembered so many incidents and students that she could have written a book. Teen Years As a child I was always improvising popular music and parts of classical music on the piano. I sometimes read a book and played music to describe what I had read. I have been pleased with the gift of being able to play by ear. Upon hearing a piece of music, I can recall and reproduce it immediately. This has been a tremendous joy and help throughout my life. We spent most of our summer vacations in Ogden Canyon and South Fork. Most of the time, relatives and friends joined us making the trips more interesting to all. One trip to Yellowstone National Park included two families of relatives. The younger ones especially found the bears scary and scurried to the safety of their family tents at first sight.
