Show Hancock, Iola Belnap, Almina Carter, Lou Jean Cragun, Audrey Jensen, Shirley Fuller, Beth Rees and Ida Marriott participated in a mid-winter concert held in North Ogden." It was a real revelation to me to attain honor student status proving to myself that I could do superior work. This was most motivating and satisfying. During my two years at Weber, Glenn Hanson, music director for Ogden High School, organized an all-girl orchestra from local talent for which I was the pianist. We appeared in concert in the Hotel Ben Lomond and other prestigious places. My Potential Had I known my potential when I was very young, I could have been an excellent concert pianistfor I had natural talent for music and perfect pitch which enabled me to identify pitches and the keys in which compositions were played. I often composed music, made my own arrangements, and composed popular music in any key. Frederic Dixon confirmed that I could have had a concert pianist career and wished he could have worked with me at an earlier age. Family duties and work have kept me from developing this talent to its fullest. I hope to leave some compositions for my descendants, but I have never regretted the time spent with my family. It has always taken priority in my life. To have fulfilled my role as a mother has been really worthwhile to me as I see my two healthy and successful children. Defense Depot in Ogden World War II had shocked our nation, and I decided to apply for a civil service job. I was hired by the Utah Army Depot, Transportation Division, Quartermaster Corps in 1942. I was file clerk and typist for Captain Walter W. Jones. When I left in 1945, I was personnel clerk in the administration office, having had several advancements, where I interviewed and hired applicants. Most of the people I associated with in my college and early years were about ten years younger than I. At night, I played at the Wasatch Club, the nicest club in Ogden, located in the Northeast section of the Hotel Ben Lomond where there was an outside entrance. I played there three or four nights a week in a combo group called the "Wasatch Quintet". The leader of the combo was Benny Bentfield, a very good alto sax player, who composed his own theme song. Darrell (Tilly) Tillotson played bass fiddle. Herb Hillard played drums. Ben Garr substituted at 'times on drums. Jiggs Van Limburg was trumpeter. Paul Wheeler played fiddle. Other musicians who at times played there included Ray Cox, sax; his wife Frances Erickson Cox, vocalistboth Ray and Frances were from Couer D' Alene; and Dee Sparrow, bass fiddle. Occasionally, Maxie Pantone sang. Maxie was the chef at the Wasatch Club where delicious steaks and dinners |
