Show marshmallows will long be remembered. At the age of 14 or 15, I was asked to be organist in the new Ogden LDS 7th Ward. There was a Estey reed pump organ which I played very well and later the electric Hammond organ and many people still recall my playing at this early age. I continued this Church service until the time of my marriage and since that time have held almost continuously this position in the various wards in Utah and Bakersfield. I have served as Sacrament Service organist, Ward Choir accompanist, stake organist, and directed the "Singing Mothers". It was hard for the average person to tell that I was not always playing by note, but relying on my ear and perfect pitch. (Editor's noteZesta Taylor Geisler an excellent arranger, choral conductor and organist said this of Ida"It was always a great inspiration to me to have Ida come quietly into the (Church) building sit at the piano and being to improvise fantastically beautiful melodies we had never heard before as the Sunday School preludes. She told me that she felt this was a gift from God and she humbly recognized His divine help as she played so effortlessly and with such artistic quality." from "History of the Ogden Seventh Ward") I have served as an officer in the ward Relief Society. I was asked to play with the Hadley Orchestra and I have kept up membership in dance bands since that time. As I was too young to drive, Dad would take me in the car to the various places the Hadley Band was playing such as West Weber. Sometimes Dad would "sit-in" on drums. The band consisted of saxophone, violins, drums and me at the piano. I often accompanied my sister when she started dating as some of our friends were in the same group. Even when Madeleine was engaged to Vern Harrop, I was usually included in on their social activities, we went to public dances at two large dance halls either the white city or the Berthana. Ward and stake formal Gold and Green Balls or other stake dances were often held there as well. Musicians' Union My future brother-in-law, Vern Harrop, a professional trumpeter, was instrumental in getting me stated in orchestra music and urged me to join the Musicians' Union which I did. I am a life-member and was honored by the Union in California for 50 years of membership and service having been a member in Utah and most recently in Bakersfield, Local 263.
