Show activities include Mr. Brock of the Department Store; Mr. Peterson, a popular salesman; the head of shoes at Brocks and Judds Ladies Clothing Store; Mr. Stinson who ran Stinson's Office Equipment, and two fine vocal teachers who taught Pam, Barbara Gabbitas and Maurene Russell. A personality whom Forrest met was the midget actor Billy Barty, and we invited him to dinner one time. For many years I was the pianist in the Kenneth Fahsbender and the Bob Bann Dance Orchestras. Currently, I am the pianist in the Bunky Valdez Orchestra. All of the musicians in this group are truly professionals. Bunky plays sax, clarinet, and flute, Jeff Stiern on drums, Glen Fong on electric bass and Melvin Mowry on trombone. (Editor's noteJohn Lacertoso a former member of the Valdez Band once wrote to the Compiler of this history: "It has been a pleasure all of these years to work with such a fine musician and person as Ida".) Piano Teaching In my piano teaching I have taught my students the same method and technique used by Frederic Dixon as he learned it from Joseffy and the masters before him. I have taught piano students all of my life and have see some fine successes in some of these youth. Some years ago, I had my Wurlitzer baby grand piano shipped from Ogden to Bakersfield and then I gave the spinet piano to my son Bradley and daughter-in-law Bette Lou Bartell Kyle so that my grand daughter, Lorianne, could have the chance to take piano lessons. Best Friends In Utah some of my best friends are Carrol Wright Hawkes DeBoer, Dorothy Little Read, Helen House Miller, the Hallings sisters who I sang with in a trio at DDO, Nina Nelson Ogden, Nan and Si Canady, Thelma Eskelson Dorius who sang well, Bishop Richard Graehl and his mother, Maude, and early boy friends Merrill Anderson, who was in the Navy and a good friend of Vern Harrop and Lee J. Glenn who was in home construction. In Bakersfield, one of my best friends and Relief Society Visiting Teacher companion for over 15 years is Lois Elms. Her husband is Bill who currently is our ward finance clerk. They have been so kind and helpful to Pamela and myself all these years. Some of the other people who have been my best friends in Bakersfield are Gladys Jensen, Nina Lazane, Patriarch Alan Pettit who is a descendant of LDS Pioneer composer William Clayton ("Come, Come, Ye Saints"), Donna Anderson Taylor, a telephone operator friend from Ogden who moved to Bakersfield and raised her family here. One of her sons is Val David Taylor who does my income tax preparation and is the youngest of the children. Another friend and relative was Julia Taylor and her oldest son is Wayne who has served in the stake presidency, our Bishop Lawrence Taylor, and Glen Taylor who worked in the Church Family History/Genealogy Department. The Taylors are descendants of grandmother Madeleine Malan Farley's, twin sister, Emily. Other best friends included the McClellen Family, John Snyder and John Lacertoso of the Bunky |
