Show in the hospital on 22 November 1961. I felt despair, realizing that I never again would hear his whistle signal as he came in the door or hear his beautiful voice. Bradley was twelve years old and Pamela was eight years old at this time. I asked L. K. Abbott to speak at the funeral as he had been close to him at work. Lawrence Taylor was Bishop at the time. The funeral was well attended. Even though ill, Forrest retained his wage until he died. There was no insurance from the company he worked for. I had to pay the doctor bills. I went to the hospital and told them that I was destitute and had minor children and they gave me a discount on some items. The hard thing was going to Social Security. Brad wanted his part of the money sent to him and to be able to spend it the way he wanted. He was not in school at the time. I was teaching piano at home and have continued teaching all my married life. I had to have a room in the house for teaching which became the living room. I used a spinet piano built during War II. I also had a small Hammond organ to be taken on the job as I was registered with the Union as a pianist and organist but this was used only about once. It was very hard to live with the Social Security amount. I played dance jobs which was the best way to earn money and had to watch the income level as this also affected the amount of Social Security received. Now a Single Mother and Sole Provider Being a widow took the wind out of my sails. Art Mortensen from the TV station was helpful after Forrest died, and I asked Madeleine to help write him a thank you note. My cousin Donna Forsgren Heed came up from Southern California to visit soon after Forrest died, stayed for a couple of days, and did some shopping. I enjoyed that visit. Her husband Willard brought a few books for Pamela and Bradley from his work at Prentice-Hall. I missed my family in Utah but kept busy with my children and visited Ogden often when my brother Orion and his wife Charlotte Griffin Marriott would pick us up for their annual Christmas and Memorial Day trips to Ogden. My Brother Orion My brother Orion was an ever-faithful son and brother and a most hospitable host to those who visited him. Charlotte worked with him side-by-side on whatever projects were at hand and sustained him with her loyalty. They have given love and generous support to their respective families throughout the years. Though they had no children of their own, they have showered love and generosity on the children of their brothers and sisters. Their constant consideration for the less fortunate has been their hallmark. My Sister Madeleine |
