Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY October 2003 A Primary Election was held at the City Office on October 7, 2003. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and closed at 8:00 p.m. Judges serving were Naomi Eilers, Elna Lucas and Gerald Taylor. Of more than 800 registered voters, 237 citizens voted. For the West District, Rob Smout and Robert DeVries were the winning candidates. Scott Van Leeuwen received the largest number of votes at 87 for the At-large seat. Ned Allred and Kent Meyerhoffer each received 61 votes. This tie resulted in the winning candidate being decided by lot, as required by law. Mr. Allred and Mr. Meyerhoffer each submitted a signed letter agreeing to a lot by drawing a name out of a container, with that person going to the final election. At the City Council Meeting on October 16th retiring At-large councilman Orvil Holley was selected to draw the name, in the presence of both candidates. Identical envelopes, each containing one of the candidate names, were prepared by Becky Burt, City Recorder, and were placed in a container. Mr. Holley drew out the name of Kent Meyerhoffer who was declared the winner. He will oppose Mr. Van Leeuwen on the November ballot. A meet-the-candidate night was held at the city office on October 26, 2003, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Darrell Mecham received the Mayor's Volunteer of the Month Community Service Award for the month of October at the council meeting on October 16, 2003. His service to the community has been outstanding. He has performed uncounted hours on the River Cove Park. He moved the flag pole from the old city office to the new office, and donated the flag pole to the city. He took more than seven tons of weeds and debris gathered by the community service inmate detail to the land fill. He paid the dumping fee, and would not accept reimbursement. The Mayor also thanked Mrs. Norine Mecham for sewing a rip in the flag which was damaged in a wind storm. Mr. Mecham, in thanking everyone for his award, encouraged the community to take weeds and branches to the land fill to help keep the community cleaned up. Deputy Lowther, in accordance with the desire of Sheriff Brad Slater to have a Citizens Advisory Board, will meet with the board on issues that may arise. He advised that Larry Leishman, Darrell Mecham, Brian Cutler, Vickie Grant and Kent Meyerhoffer currently are serving on the board. President Ilium has checked on how sales tax on the purchase of vehicles is handled. The Utah State Tax Commission informed him that the sales tax is coded by zip code. Marriott-Slaterville and Ogden share the zip code 84404, and the sales tax is distributed to Ogden. Bits and Pieces Quincee Parker, daughter of Dwight and Ashley Parker, was born October 3, 2003.
