Back row: Mr. Dabb, Director; Caroline Hoggan, Diana; David Jacobs, Pilone; Gerald Bellon, Wilfred; Jean Anderson, Agnes; Larry Dalrymple, Robert; Dave Jorgensen, Herman; and Arlene Gibson, Ruthie. Down to Earth Agnes and Wilfred, two angels . . . complete with Cosmic Counters, descend to earth to pick up two elderly souls. Their mission, however, is complicated when mischievous Pilone, an apprentice angel with only one wing, joins them in a kind of heavenly “Hitch Hike.” Theugh Agnes and Wilfred’s respective clients live in the same block, they are not on friendly terms. Augusta Applegate, a spinster, has accumulated vast wealth by reason of her shrewd and pioneering personality; and she intends to resist with her iron will any attempts to separate her from it. Her deep disdain for her neighbor, Herman Howell, who . . . with only his love for his cat and his flowers to sustain him... is understandable. Her man is completely resigned to “going” ... even to the point of getting a weekly neck-clip in order to be ready. Certainly, this kindly, sweet dispositioned retired seaman is no match for Augusta .. . until Pilone enters the picture, that is. Unsconsciously on the side of the angels also are Augusta’s two nieces, Orpha Teel and Millie Bromsley, who vainly try to interest Augusta in giving her money to them. Orpha is a social climber and a widow with designs on rich, near-sighted Robert Hanley as a husband for her grown daughter, Ruthie. Millie has an inventor-husband whose latest gadget is a thimble that threads needles. Pilone no sooner sets foot in the Applegate living room before he discovers that he has been granted certain very special powers. He is able to make people fall in love and with this power he quickly sets to work confusing the natural love matches. 132 Before the final curtain the threads of romance are re-woven in a happier pattern, Pilone earns his other wing, and all the right people are heaven bound. |
