A course designed to help the student find enjoyment and profit in reading the works, both fiction and non-fiction, of contemporary writers, and to teach him to discriminate between the rewarding and the inconsequential in the "best sellers" which flood the market. Two quarter hours. Autumn. P. Allred Speech It is recommended that students majoring in speech complete Speech 1, 5, 10 and 13, and whenever possible, 3, and 21. 1. Principles of Speech. An introductory course to the general field of speech with emphasis on the cultivation of attitudes, habits, and skill that should continue to function beyond the class room itself. This course should precede the more specialized work covered in Speech 3 and 21. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Staff 2. Voice and Diction. This course is devoted to a study of the speech mechanism and to its relation to effective voice; to a study of basic sounds and their relation to correct enunciation, articulation and pronunciation. The course is designed, also to provide the basis for remedial efforts for students having voice handicaps, or speech disorders or defects. Recommended for students who require speech diagnosis and advice in connection with oral difficulties, as well as for speech majors needing foundation in the field of remedial speech. Three quarter hours. Autumn. White ■ 3. Extempore Speaking. A course designed to give special training in speech making exclusively. It deals with the most frequently used types of speeches and places careful emphasis on choice of subjects, sound organization, effective content, and delivery. Three quarter hours. Autumn. T. Allred 5. Interpretation. A course devoted to the purposes of more effective oral reading. It lays emphasis on cultivation of literary tastes, and on the acquiring of pratical skills in analyzing and in the oral interpretation of selected reading matter. Recommended for the individual uses and satisfactions of the student and as a preliminary course to Acting or Radio Speech. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Winter, Spring. T. Allred, Kelly 6. Speech for the Classroom Teacher. A course designed in cooperation with the Department of Education to give training in the aspects of sneech deemed most helpful to persons intending to become classroom teachers. The cultivation of basic skills with attention to the special needs of the individual student is given careful attention. Three quarter hours. Winter. T. Allred 7. Speech for Public Performance. A course to provide training with a view to public appearances as an immediate outgrowth of class effort. Both practical services and entertainment values are stressed.
