Show resulted in bitter prolonged defeat for Jim's team and burnt meat for everybody. In Farmington Jim was invited to speak to the Women's Club and confidently stated that he could "handle these old biddies." In the "question and answer period" his glib answers did not satisfy the more aggressive ladies in the audience, one of whom was the Mayor's wife. This resulted in some unfavorable front-page publicity in the local newspaper and an insistence on the part of Tim Winterer that they dine that evening in an inconspicuous place because Tim didn't want to be seen in public with so controversial a figure. There have been other signs that this competent, competitive leader sometimes needed a keeper. There was the time when Jim and Barbara were escorting the Board of Directors to Australia. Jim arrived down under with two passports in his possession - one for him and one for Steve who wasn't there, and none for Barbara who was. Or the time he forgot his own passport traveling from England to Belgium, or when he left his billfold on the car floor or when he left his jacket in the car parked at the airport. Jim was lucky to marry above his station. But he has not always seemed aware of how much of his success was really due to Barbara. One time when Jim was riding Barbara about talking too much Barbara said: "Jim, I'm very interested in what I have to say !" I only poke fun at really good friends that I hold in high esteem and great affection. This is true tonight. None of us does the corporate job by ourselves. I was blessed with very able associates. So was Bud. So was Jim. But one of the measurements of leadership is the quality of the legacy you bequeath to your successors. Jim has proven himself a superb corporate executive as the record shows. I would be less than human if I did not say to Jim how intensely proud I am of his professional performance. Even more important to me has been the quality of his friendship so richly endowed with the things that endear and endure. These are treasures I truly prize. Thank you, Jim, and thank you gathered here for hearing me out. 4 |
