Show to $4.9 billion. The total value of all the GE shares received by our shareholders from the merger is $11.5 billion today and the dividends received amount to $335 million annually. This alone is 89% more than our highest earnings before the GE merger. It sure beats working! Many people worked very hard to make this possible and time prevents me from giving due credit to them. I succeeded Allen Christensen as general manager in 1958 but we should not forget Allen had much to do with starting us down the right path. Marriner Eccles served the company very capably for over 50 years and was as wise as mortal men come. He was my mentor and my esteemed friend. He is entitled to great credit for his contribution to Utah's success. His contribution was at the Board level, not the operating level. He was the constant watchdog of the shareholders' interest and the toughest, highest hurdle we in management had to clear in getting approval for the revolutionary things we proposed and did. And there is A. M. "Bud" Wilson, my successor after the merger and importantly before the merger my chief operating officer who recruited, trained, and managed with me as fine a management group as was ever put together. I am indebted to them and others and the David Eccles School of Business should be too. Thank you. 13 |
