Show the chips are down - whether it is running the company or determining when the blinds will be drawn at the duck club - the "majority of one" controls! Seventh, it is important for Steve to know how he is doing, to be able to measure his progress against some standards. Most of us are content to keep golf scores on a single card and willing to entrust the chore to others. But Steve will insist on keeping his own statistics and this requires at least three cards and a secret code that I suspect records in detail any transgressions from absolute perfection. What happens to these records is still a mystery. I do know they don't end up shredded on the floor of the Lear like the contents of the package of mail he gets from the office. He's even got Betty shredding her mail. Together they make the floor of the Lear look like a cat's litter box. Nor is it enough to know how many birds you shot. You must count the shells required to shoot them! The uninitiated might think this was an economy move by someone "one the shorts" but old friends know it comes from one who is quicker than anyone I know in grabbing the check and in sharing his bounty. Lastly, Steve combines all this with a strong sense of what is right and what it wrong. You sink all the putts. You call on yourself any high penalties you might incur. You set a high standard and you live by it. You demand a level of performance from those that work with you and for you. 4 |
