Show Suddenly the decibel level would be shattered by the roar of a Waring blender doing its thing to a mixture of ice and liquid ingredients, none of which could be described as a "health food". The operator was Ed, dressed in one of several bright colored kimonos that must have been acquired for him at some close-out sale in Chinatown. So fortified by a Green Dragon or a Silver Fizz, Ed then moved on to breakfast. His campmates sat there eating their fresh fruit, Raisin Bran, and dry toast and envying while Ed debated whether this was the day for kippers, pancakes and bacon, or corned beef hash or some combination thereof. Once the kimonos had been put away, Ed became Mandalay's best dressed member. He alternately wore one of three vests lovingly needle-pointed for him -- one featuring black and yellow Labrador dogs, the second, wild game like pheasants and ducks, and the third depicting fly fishing. Add to this some distinctive headgear that not only protected him from the sun but made him easy to find in a crowd, a feature useful in Bohemia where crowds are common. Ed was acknowledged as one of Mandalay's very best bridge players as well as domino players. Not content with just fleecing his campmates, Ed frequently brought in members from other camps to share the risks and bear the losses. He was great fun to play with and at least you had the sense of comfort that comes with knowing that once in every four hands that you would have Ed for a partner. 2 |
