Show "Homecoming International" Beckons Alumni Former students from all 50 states and several foreign countries were invited to attend the 1966 Homecoming International. President William P. Miller announced more than 100,000 students had graduated from the institution since its founding in 1889. The week's activities began with "Whitewash the 'W Hike." Student body President Jack Suttlemyre said the students had been trying for more than 50 years to build a "W" on the hill. The idea was first conceived in 1916, but plans were thwarted by objections from townspeople. At any rate, Suttlemyre directed completion of the "W" and it was ready for the homecoming game with Idaho State. A Flaming "W" Rally was held for students on the hill, while alumni attended a banquet and class reunions in the union building. Other activities included the annual talent show, homecoming parade and two dances. Former president and congressman Henry Aldous Dixon (extreme left) and faculty member J. Clair Anderson, greet guests at the annual alumni banquet. Idaho State University students arrive at Ogden's Union Depot and march to WSC campus for homecoming football game. Weber won 16-7. "Freedom Through Student Exchange" is the sweepstakes winner in the 1966 Homecoming International parade. The green, white and gold float was sponsored by Excelsior Fraternity. One of many presentations at the homecoming talent show was a vaudeville act with Rep. Laurence J. Burton, R-Utah; Rulon Garfield, and Dean Hurst. They are Weber State Alumni. An enthusiastic "audience participation" comedy reading is presented by Joan Henkel. |
