Show ASWSC Signpost Editorial Reaction November Page 5 7 ,1980 Apathy Distroys Freedoms Dear Editor, I am writing this in reply to some recent heated editorials.I am currently serving as the Associated Students Public Relations Vice President. Associated Students has initiated many outstanding programs this year. The attendance and participation at activities has increased immensely this year. I feel that Associated Students offers numerous services to the studentbody and are involved in many constructive projects this year. In a recent editorial, it was stated that we (ASWSC) ought to help students with off-campus housing, married student housing, day-care and consumer tips. John Dawson, Student Services Vice President, is currently working hard on all these projects. I would like to clarify our stand on our proposed stipend increase. First of all, we did not pass the stipend increase, although we did add a ‘‘merit pay’’ program. | This ‘‘merit pay’’ increase is awarded only if we officers take on additional projects, special programs, and devote additional hours. Dear Editor The following is my rebut. | tal to an article from Nov. 4 issues of the Signpost. In response to a recent article entitled ‘‘Please Leave Students Apathetic,’’ I would like to make the following comment. Those people who think ‘it doesn’t concern me’ or ‘what you don’t know won’t hurt you,’ have never seen a state of ignorance lower than our own here on the wasatch front or off the beaten track of society. I myself do not declare myself as an expert on the subject but I have had experience with people who have not had the same opporunity to learn as we do. This particular society was not apathetic to the country in which they lived. As a matter of fact those who could learn anything about their country’s delema were determined to do something about it. I have concluded from this that apathy is a common trait among learned people but which does not affect the learned but the I feel we will be able to devote many more hours and imple- ment new programs as a result of the merit pay proposal. I don’t feel it is an unjustified proposal, as it will increase the effectiveness of student g°vernment. We welcome student input at all Legislative Council meetings. These meetings are held each Monday at one p.m. and Thursday at seven a.m. I am aware that a problem exists in informing the studentbody about the activities of student government. We are trying to solve this problem by implementing various communication projects around campus. A project that we are working on is new outside bulletin boards to improve the communication problems we are experiencing with advertising upcoming events. Another editorial stated that they felt our leadership conference was not needed. I disagree because I feel that the leadership conference we held this fall was a very worthwhile and effective training session for those in attendance. We have had many successful activities this year, and I would like to invite everyone out to the many upcoming activities we have planned. Faye Hardy unlearned in their midst. Those people who would rather be left alone do not realize how fortunate they are to have their freedom. They haven’t earned it, they don’t know what it is and they definitely don’t deserve it. After seeing a nation void of but a few freedoms struggle to peacefully gain more freedom, I can realize how indeed fortunate I am to bea citizen of a free country and to be able to exercise that freedom. That freedom includes the right to know who is running for office, what is going on and to express themselves to others who care to listen. If by chance you happen to be one who cares not to see, hear, or know about others in this world, particularly the one immediately around you; may I suggest to you to close your eyes, plug your ears and nose, tape your mouth shut, climb in a pine box and have yourself buried six feet under. That is what you really want isn’t it. If it isn’t then you’d better start caring for something more than an open advertisement and especially your own selves and start finding out what civic responsibilities are. If it sounds like I’m attacking you as an individual then maybe you do have a concience but that you are unlearned in the seriousness of this world’s problems. I don’t want to take away your freedom if you are willing to do something about it, but if you don’t care then the afore mentioned technique of ridding yourself of these annoyances is definitely for you. I hope that you would have a few more brains than to try something only those who fail to see the real world around them, would do. In - my own opinion I feel that the only freedom rightfully yours is to choose how they will bury you. After all that will be the only thing remembered about you. Mary Jean James _ Article Error Found Dear Editor, I am writing in reference to an article that appeared in your Nov. 4 edition of the Signpost. It seems that the illustrious president of the Weber States Interfraternal Council, Mike DeCarlo has made another outrageous blunder. The greatest error in the article, ‘Fraternities Grow’, concerns the reported membership and fall pledge of one Fraternity. In gathering this information a normal level of incompetence was practiced. The fraternity in question is Tan Kappa Epsilon. DeCarlo reported that TKE has only fourteen activies and has only aquired two pledges. This error is understandable that is if the writer is normal and has only two thumbs, eight fingers, and ten toes. The facts stand for future information, at this point in time TKE has 19 activities and nine pledges. The orginal pledge class was with a net loss of only one. However, one accurate statement was made and that was the high graduation rate. Jerry Gledhill Brother of TKE (SPORTS, PAINTY RAINS, FUN, SUN, THE BOYS’ CABIN OFF LIMITS.
