Show ‘Commissioner’s Message Earlier this month, Shirley Peterson assumed the duties of Commissioner for the Internal Revenue Service. The following are excerpts from Commissioner Peterson’s message to all employees. "First, I want to tell you how honored I am to be part of this fine agency. I have the highest regard for the organization and for all of you. I know that most of you have dedicated your lives to making the tax system work, and I regard that as an extraordinarily important contribution And let me digress for a moment. In my opinion, the strategies of ethics and diversity are just as important as the other three strategies. No agency can long fo our country... survive as a credible agency without a The right way to go I understand that the arrival of a new Commissioner can be very unsettling -particularly when one follows in the footsteps of such a fantastic fellow as Fred Goldberg. I assure you, and I would appreciate it if you would pass the word on to your peers and employees -- I have the deepest respect for what you have accomplished while Fred was here. I believe that the direction he set 1s absolutely the right way to go and I am committed to seeing that vision carried out. solid foundation of ethical principles. Specifically, I want to reiterate that I am committed to the strategic goals of reducing taxpayer burden, of increasing voluntary compliance and of achieving quality driven productivity gains. These goals will be accomplished through the strategies of Compliance 2000, Tax Systems Modernization, Quality, Ethics and Diversity. A season of change Likewise, we must successfully engage the issue of diversity. As the first female Commissioner, I have some personal knowledge of and stake in the whole diversity question. All of our employees must enjoy the opportunity to advance and to be the very best they can be. You will have my full support in achieving that goal... I know this has been a season of change at the top of the organization. Fred Ken Wilder Goldberg’s and Mike Murphy’s contributions to the IRS will be long remembered and appreciated. But there is a leadership team in place that is able and raring to go. Mike Dolan has already proved himself to be an invaluable Deputy. I will rely heavily on him, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors to advise me, and I will try hard to do the right thing for you, the entire agency and for the taxpayers of this country. I also want you to know that I intend to be here for a long time. While the upcoming election will obviously affect my career, I want to assure you that my personal plans are to be here for 5 years. Finally, I want you to know what my personal goal is. At the end of my tenure, the hallmark of my stay will be significant measurable improvement in the goals we already identified. We should be able to look back and say, “What a long way we’ve come!" ... be assured that I will listen to you. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible." of (From Page 1) * between the Service Center and the the Marshall White Center. community on job opportunities and classes are held in conjunction with various local activities.
