Pianos Conn OGDEN Band AND Instruments SALT LAKE OGDEN, UTAH CITY THE INFORMATION Football is the oldest of all modern sports. The Bible speaks of a game in which the boys kicked the ball around, and the Greeks had a form legimatized mayhem, which seems to have been strikingly similar to the modern pastime. It was played on a field with sidelines, a center line and goal lines and the object of the game was to pass, kick or carry the ball across the opposite goal line. Football was a kicking and catching game in England until 1823 when a brash and imaginative young man named William Webb Ellis revolutionized the sport by picking up the ball and doing the first piece of swivel-hipped open field running to his opponent's goal line. The captain of his team apologized for Ellis’ unseemly conduct but the idea caught, and now a tablet memorializes Ellis’ famous dash. The forward pass was used more or less illegally, when the refree wasn’t looking, from 1876 on until it was legitimized in 1906. John W. Heisman, after whom the annual trophy awarded to the year’s outstanding football player is named, saw its possibilities and campaigned for its adoption.
