During the first two years, 1932-34, the college was sponsored by the Episcopal Church with the Right Reverend Middleton S. Barnwell, Bishop of Idaho, as its first president. In June, 1934, in response to an appeal from Bishop Barnwell a board of public-spirited individuals assumed the responsibility of directing the school, and as a result a_ non-profit corporation was formed whose stockholders were Boise citizens interested in education. The building formerly housing the college had once been used for a girls’ academy under the direction of the Episcopal Church. The Church Shae gererously donated the use of the buildings for the operation of the school. In September of 1939 Boise Junior College began its first academic year as a public institution. In February, 1939, an enabling act permitting the formation of junior college districts was passed by the legislature, and signed by the governor.
