Head center Buchanan, back PRESENTING MILTON "RED" HAND Football Coach Los Angeles City College Despite all popular beliefs that number 13 is regarded as one of the most unluckiest of symbols it seems that Coach Milton ‘Red”’ Hand has reason to believe otherwise for two important reasons. First, in his thirteenth year of tenure as line coach, he was suddenly handed the reins to the Cub football squad, and second, he was thrust into the limelight on the fabulous “‘pigskin merry-go-round” where he may catch the prized golden ring and ride the Cubs into their first undefeated season since 1941 and Jackie Fellows. Since this is his initial year at the Cub helm, the 42-year-old Hand started a tough job by switching from last season’s T formation to the older and more established single-wing. Hand, who is six feet tall and weighs 220 ~ pounds, does not believe that one formation is better than the other. “The success or failure of any attack can only be attributed to the material handling it,” he remarked. The land of sunshine and oranges lured Hand at the age of 12 from South Dakota, and Colorado, where he was born. He then attended Long Beach Poly High and gained a berth on the Southern California championship prep team that played Glendale in the Coliseum. After one year at Sacramento Jaycee, Hand played at Stanford for three years, alternating between end, tackle, and guard. In 1932 the blue-eyed and red-haired coach accepted the role of assistant to Glenn C. Ackerman and showed his “know how” to the Cub linemen until 1943. 3. ‘Win one for the Gipper” was a gan of (a) Notre Dame (b) Minnesota Southern California. 4, The first ‘All-American’ team picked in (a) 1889 (b) 1903 (c) 1921. 5.
