Show 22 weber college Public Speaking Contest The James L. Barker Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. To the class of the school attaining the highest number of credits in this contest, the James L. Barker Cup is awarded. To the student receiving first place a cash prize of ten dollars is given. The J. S. Lewis Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. The J. S. Lewis Medal is awarded to the winner by the J. S. Lewis Company. The Grant Oratorical Contest. To the successful competitor of this contest, President Heber J. Grant presents an autographed book. Literary Contest The Flora Eccles Douglas Literary Contest. Mrs. Flora Eccles Douglas awards annually three prizes for literary excellence in different forms of written composition; one of twenty dollars to the student producing the best poem; one of fifteen dollars to the author of the best short story; another of fifteen dollars to the student writing the best essay. The winner of one award is not barred from participation in other contests. Publications The Acorn is the school year-book. Its management is under the supervision of the Board of Control. The Weber Herald is the bi-weekly school paper edited and managed by the students of the college under the direction of the English department. The Weber Literary Journal is a monthly magazine reproducing students' work of special merit in poetry, essays and short stories. WEBER COLLEGE Dramatics 23 .. ... ■ • Each year the students of the College present a first class play at the Orpheum Theatre. Members of the cast are selected by means of competitive tryouts for the various parts. Only regular students of the school are permitted to participate in the competitions. The music department presents annually an opera. Public Service Bureau The Public Service Bureau is an organization within the Student Association whose purpose is to furnish gratuitously, a complete or partial program of music, readings, or speeches for any recognized organization, either religious or civic. French and German Clubs The French and German Clubs meet one evening each week. Social and scholarly activities are fostered by the students themselves under the direction of the Modern Language instructor. Programmes are given in German and French language, dance, and song. All students who are taking Courses in French and German, as well as others interested in the languages, are requested to participate. Founders' Day Weber perpetuates many interesting school traditions, chief among them being Founders' Day. It is observed January 7th, by a ceremony which includes a pilgrimage of the entire school in gala attire, to all the former homes of Weber. ^^ |
