26 WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH PLACEMENT AND FOLLOW-UP BUREAU The purpose of the Weber College Placement and Follow-up Bureau is two-fold: (1) to assist students to obtain part-time work while attending the College and (2) to assist graduates to obtain permanent positions. It aims to coordinate the various employment services, such as employment, with the business and industrial firms of Utah; the continuous follow-up program by instructors and coordinators of the College, a service that extends to both former students and business employers; and the advisory committees of employees and employers who sponsor vocational courses in each field, counsel with teachers, and promote the advancement and placement of students. The Bureau works in cooperation with the United States Department of Placement to place every student who is seeking employment, and to follow-up at all times the employment needs of the business and industrial firms of the State. A full-time Placement Officer is appointed to Weber College from the United States D apartment of Placement. LYCEUM The Weber College Lyceum cooperates with the Ogden Community Concert Association by presenting a combined series of outstanding attractions for the enjoyment of Weber College students and community concert members. Twelve to fifteen diversified attractions of national and international reputation appear each year. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are offered annually by the following organizations, individuals, and institutions: Chi Omega Alumnae give a twenty-five dollar tuition scholarship to a first-year Weber College woman on the bases of (1) scholarship, (2) participation in student activities, and (3) personal qualifications that conform to Chi Omega standards of Hellenic culture and Christian ideals. The Junior Child Culture Club award one full tuition scholarship of seventy-five dollars to a first-year College student upon the basis of scholarship together with a consideration of personal qualifications. The Ogden Branch of the American Association of University Women offer an annual twenty-five dollar tuition-scholarship to a first-year college woman. The bases of selection are (1) high scholarship and (2) personal worth. An additional ten-dollar cash award is given for the winning essay, debate, or any other project designated by the American Association of University Women. The Howard D. Merrill Memorial Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship at Weber College, was established in 1943-1944 by Dr. and Mrs. L. S. Merrill in memory of their son, a student of Weber College for the year 1935-1936, and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1941. Ensign Merrill was killed in action at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, the first from Weber College and Ogden City to die in the service of his country in the event that precipitated the United States declaration of war against Japan in World War II. The scholarship was created in the belief that great benefit would accrue to any student who would "emulate the spirit of determination, helpfulness, and courage that so completely characterized Howard D. Merrill." WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 27 Higher institutions of learning annually extend scholarships to Weber College graduates. The Utah State Agricultural College, The University of Utah, and the Brigham Young University each give one or more full-tuition scholarships. Students recommended from Weber College have been successful in obtaining scholarships from the University of Southern California, Occidental College, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the College of the Pacific. Weber College students have also won the Willard D. Thompson Scholarship to the University of California, the Henry Newell Scholarship to Stanford University; and through competitive examination, the privilege of entering the California Institute of Technology. Weber College offers scholarships to incoming freshmen and returning sophomores. Recipients of the freshmen scholarships are determined by the principals of the high schools from which the students are graduated, and the number of awards to any one high school in attendance at Weber College at the time the scholarship grants are made. In addition to these general scholarships, Weber College annually awards a varying number of special music scholarships, some full and some part-tuition. The recipients are selected by the instructor of music at Weber College and are passed upon by the President of the College and the Faculty Committee on Awards and Scholarships. There are also several part-time and full-tuition scholarships in the fields of speech, English, and athletics. The recipients are selected in the same manner as they are for music. A few scholarships are distributed directly by the Faculty Committee on Awards and Scholarships. LOAN FUND The Weber College Faculty Women maintain a small loan fund to assist a limited number of worthy students to secure financial aid in order to finish their school term. The loans are paid back to this organization by September of the school year after the loan is made. Application for this service may be made to the Weber College Treasurer. TEA FOR GRADUATES The Faculty Women also honor the graduates of each year at a tea held during Commencement Week.
